MTN Group’s new CEOs in Ghana, South Sudan take the reins
Stephen Blewett and Ali Monzer, MTN's newly appointed CEOs in Ghana and South Sudan respectively, assumed their positions this week to drive the company’s Ambitious 2025 agenda.
This follows recent changes to MTN Group's leadership structure, which took effect on 1 April.
Blewett was appointed CEO of MTN Ghana in December, succeeding Selorm Adadevoh, who was moved to the position of group chief commercial officer.
Blewett, a telecoms industry veteran, re-joined MTN last year as operations executive for markets, with executive responsibility for the smaller West and Central African (WECA) region. He will also provide broader operations support to the senior vice president for markets across the WECA region.
MTN Ghana is one of the telco's main markets, particularly in fintech. During the current reporting period, MTN Ghana's active Mobile Money (MoMo) subscribers climbed by 20.1% to 15.2 million, while MoMo revenue increased by 48.8% to $230 million.
Last month, Africa's largest telecom carrier selected Ali Monzer as CEO of its South Sudan business.
Monzer, an MTN insider, has held various positions in the group, most recently as MTN Uganda's chief technology and information officer. In a statement, the business said he brings more than 23 years of telecoms sector experience to his new role.
Nonetheless, Monzer confronts a difficult task in South Sudan, where the situation is complicated by the volatile situation in the country and soaring inflation.
MTN South Sudan's service revenue declined by 12.3% year on year in the financial year ending December 2023.
