Malawi's comms regulator warns against sharing graphic plane crash images
In Malawi's constitution, under section 97 of the Electronic Transactions Act and Cybersecurity Act, it is a crime to circulate graphic and insensitive materials.
Recently, pictures have been circulating on social media relating to the plane crash which killed Malawi's Vice President D Saulos Chilima, and eight others at Chikangawa Forest in Northern Malawi.
The Malawi's Communications Regulator, (MACRA) has cautioned of this online behaviour saying it will lead to arrest.
"We remind the public that the circulation of disturbing or exploitative material, especially related to tragic incidents, can cause immense harm and distress. Let us instead come together to support one another and create a space of compassion during this difficult time," said Daudi Suleman, MACRA's director general.
The Act mandates MACRA to promote public education on safe and responsible online behavior, including cyber hygiene.
