Zambia intends to develop payment portal for local govts
Zambia has announced intentions to establish a payment gateway for local governments and other institutions.
According to the government, this platform will transform how citizens pay for services and levies, guaranteeing that relevant institutions get money straight into their bank accounts.
During the 'Let the People Talk' Radio Programme on Radio Phoenix, SMART Zambia national coordinator Percy Chinyama announced the new payment gateway, explaining that citizens will be able to pay their levies, rates, and other fees online, with the funds securely transferred to the appropriate local authorities.
Smart Zambia Institute is an e-government section inside the President's office that is in charge of managing and promoting electronic government services and operations.
During the radio show, Chinyama said: "The payment gateway is designed to ensure that all funds are paid directly to the relevant institutions, eliminating the need for intermediaries and reducing the risk of revenue leakages.
"This will not only enhance transparency and accountability but also improve the efficiency of revenue collection for local authorities."
Chinyama emphasised that the establishment of the payment gateway is an important step towards improving openness and accountability in Zambia's public financial management system. It is expected to lower the possibility of revenue leakage while also ensuring that public money is used effectively.
"With the payment gateway, local authorities such as the Kabwe Municipal Council will be able to offer their services online, allowing citizens to make payments from the comfort of their own homes. This will not only improve the convenience of service delivery but also reduce the administrative burden on local authorities."
"The payment gateway is expected to be launched soon, and citizens will be able to access it through various payment channels, including online banking and mobile money platforms," he said.
