A limited rollout of electricity is holding back Botswana’s efforts to implement ICT initiatives across most parts of the country.

This is according to Botswana’s education and skills development minister, Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi.

“Other villages have no electricity so taking a chargeable tool to these people is untenable,” said Venson-Moitoi, speaking about her plans to spread the use of ICT at Botswana schools.

Despite electricity challenges, the minister nevertheless said that government intends to reconstruct dilapidated classrooms into ICT laboratories at each school with at least forty IT terminals for use.

“We want to do this all the way from primary school to secondary school.”

Minister Venson-Moitoi also asked donors to assist her government’s ambitious plan.

Meanwhile, the ministry of education has joined forces with the ministry of local government as well as the energy and water resources ministry to help electrify nine primary schools in Mahalapye, a district in central of Botswana.
