Zimbabwe's biggest mobile network Econet Wireless on Wednesday launched its 'Connected Car' vehicle tracking service, under its 'Ecotracker' unit.

The service will cost a once-off installation fee of $100 for corporates and $200 for individuals. There will be additional $20 monthly fees for both categories.

There are about 1.2 million vehicles in Zimbabwe according to the motor industry association in the country.

Darlington Mandivenga, the chief executive officer of Econet Services, said the company was "now turning attention to connecting people with their things such as vehicles".

He said this had come after the company had successfully invested "connecting people to people" in the past few years.

"We have spent a lot of money connecting people to people," he said.

The Econet Connected Car service can also be accompanied with a mobile app that can be downloaded from Google Play or the Apple store.

With Econet Connected Car, vehicles can perform regular self-diagnosis and report to its owner.

"This is under what Econet Services calls the personal vehicle management service, which also offers services such as geo fencing and driver habit monitoring," the company said in a press release.
