MultiChoice looks to expand African DTT services
African pay-TV operator MultiChoice is expanding the reach of its digital terrestrial television (DTT) on the continent with the help of satellite company Intelsat.
MultiChoice offers DTT services via its GOtv offering, which the pay-TV company says has reached 547,000 paying households in countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Zambia, Namibia and Malawi. (The service; though, has been suspended in Zimbabwe - click here for more information on this story.)
Intelsat; then, is set to help Multichoice expand its C-band capacity on Intelsat 904 at 60º East satellite to help distribute content to its terrestrial towers for DTT services.
“Intelsat has a strong track record of supporting DTT and DTH (direct to the home) deployments throughout Africa,” said Grant Marais, Intelsat’s regional vice president, Africa Sales in a press statement.
“Intelsat 904 C-band provides MultiChoice with unparalleled reception quality, reliability and reach, enabling them to expand their DTT service offerings in Sub-Saharan Africa. As DTT signals allow for more efficient use of spectrum, MultiChoice will be able to provide existing and new customers with more differentiated content at very competitive prices,” claimed Marais.
