Kenya’s JamboPay eyes African online payment expansion

Kenyan online and mobile payment gateway JamboPay, which says it has over 100,000 users, is eyeing an expansion in several African markets.

JamboPay, which forms part of an offering from Kenya-based Web Tribe Company, provides an online payment system that integrates with mobile money offerings in the market.

And Danson Muchemi, the chief executive officer of JamboPay, has said the company is eyeing rapid growth in the near future.

“JamboPay is in the process of replicating our successful Kenyan model across Africa. You should expect to see a pan-African e-payment platform. Tanzania, Senegal and Kenya are already up and running,” Muchemi told ITWeb Africa.

Furthermore, the service is expected to join the likes of FloCash that offers online payment solutions across several African countries.

But Muchemi says that as the continent embraces high speed internet, online payments via the likes of desktop and laptop devices may become just as popular as mobile payments.

Muchemi says he sees great growth in this particular sector.

“Over last four years, we have seen a steady growth of online payments. Over 700 business and government organisations use JamboPay. We have over 100,000 regular users,” Muchemi said.

But this observation is not stopping the company from launching more mobile money transfer offerings in future, says Muchemi.

JamboPay’s success has been acknowledged at the Connected Kenya conference this year, after it bagged the Google Award for ‘Innovation in Financial Services’.
