InDrive, a US-based e-hailing firm that has been expanding across Africa, is now offering services in Lesotho.

InDrive announced yesterday the launch of its ride-hailing service in the country, saying this is part of the company's continued expansion throughout Southern Africa.

In contrast to traditional ride-hailing applications, inDrive allows drivers and riders in Lesotho to choose their own charges rather than complying with costs set by algorithms, according to the company.

"Passengers can describe their trip and make a fare suggestion, while drivers can accept, decline, or make a counteroffer without penalty. Consider the fare amount, car type, projected arrival time, and driver ratings while making your pick. Drivers can choose profitable and convenient requests," inDrive said.

It further stated that in Lesotho, the service fee has been eliminated, allowing drivers to keep 100% of their revenues. This no-commission offer is valid for six months, before reverting to the usual cost.

"There is a clear need for a new approach to ride-hailing," said Vincent Lilane, business development representative for Southern Africa.

He added: “InDrive’s unique fare negotiation model empowers drivers and passengers to agree on a price without algorithmic restrictions. We believe that this method offers a sound solution to many current challenges in the Southern African ride-hailing market."

Furthermore, the firm stated that safety is a key priority for inDrive, and that thorough background checks are performed on drivers, including the verification of required paperwork and licences.

"Passengers are encouraged to rate their rides, providing insights into driver behaviour and service quality," said the company.
