SA's GoMetro reaches 200,000 users
The South African Metrorail mobile application GoMetro has 200,000 active users, says founder and chief executive officer Justin Coetzee.
Launched in partnership with South Africa's Metrorail - GoMetro provides commuters with information on real-time train schedules, train fares, timetable deviations, and platform changes.
Coetzee told ITWeb Africa that reaching 200,000 active users is their most important metric.
According to Coetzee they have handled over 10 million trip requests over the last two years since the launch of the app.
He added that they have done a lot with the app since its launch like rolling out a commuter update system in the app so that users can share their updates and progress in the transport system.
"We are now focussing on bringing more value and use to our users who rely on us every day," said Coetzee.
They have also rolled-out a crowdsourced public transport social network to Metrorail, Golden Arrow, MyCiti, Gautrain and Rea Vaya, which is live in seven cities across South Africa, he said.
Coetzee also confirmed that the mobile train app is already available in the Firefox operating system (OS) store.
"As soon as Firefox OS phones are introduced into SA, people will be able to download GoMetro and have public transport times and commuter updates on their phones," he told ITWeb Africa.
Commenting on the decision to integrate the GoMetro app on Firefox OS enabled smartphones Coetzee said they are hoping to grow internationally.
"The app is available on the international store right now, and there has already been some interest from other countries which already have Firefox OS phones in the market.
"Users want great apps on their phones, and we want users to discover GoMetro wherever they are in the world. This helps us prioritise the roll-out of cities internationally as we expand outside South Africa," he stated.
