Zimbabwe's NetOne rolls out mobile 4G internet

Zimbabwe state owned mobile company, NetOne, has introduced 4G internet accessibility for subscribers on its network.

NetOne – with just below 2.5 million subscribers – is the third largest cellphone operator in Zimbabwe after Econet Wireless, which has 9 million network users and Telecel Zimbabwe, with around 2.5 million.

Econet Wireless was the first telco to introduce 4G internet accessibility in Zimbabwe, although it was only accessible through modems.

The Company introduced the high speed internet platform for the United Nations World Tourism Organisation general assembly in Victoria Falls last year and subsequently rolled it out to major urban centers such as Bulawayo and Harare.

NetOne has now introduced 4G internet accessibility through mobile phones for its subscribers, describing the offering as 'the fastest internet connectivity platform in Zimbabwe through mobile phones at the moment'.

"There are frustrations with mobile internet accessibility in Zimbabwe at the moment and the introduction of 4G through mobile phones will solve such problems as it is a high speed option," said a marketing executive at NetOne.

The company is running adverts in Zimbabwean newspapers informing subscribers of the introduction of 4G internet accessibility. NetOne managing director, Reward Kangai, was not immediately available for comment.

Kangai has previously stated that his company was geared to bring high speed internet accessibility throughout the country.

NetOne is securing a loan facility from China, which it will use to expand its network and capacity, enabling it to bring the latest high tech platforms to its service portfolio - which also includes mobile money.
