Attendance at Africa’s biggest video gaming and consumer tech show rAge has grown over 8% this year to reach 28,930 visitors, according to its event organisers.

The 10th annual gaming expo was held at the Coca Cola dome in Johannesburg from 5 to 7 October.

Events such as live eSports, gamer lifestyle exhibitions and a Local Area Network (LAN) gaming tournament, called NAG LAN, had over 2,500 gamers participating in a 53-hour marathon event.

Increased footfall at the event, though, has highlighted potential constraints on the parts of organisers and the venue, says senior project manager at rAge Michael James.

“Growth like this does not come without a few negatives here and there,” said James in a statement.

“We are already in discussion with the venue’s fire and safety team about widening the aisles to ease congestion.

“We’re adding more tellers at the front for rAge 2013 to process the queues, as sometimes the wait was up to an hour. We’ll be adding more ATM machines and insisting that all exhibitors use hard lines for credit card machines.

“As for the LAN we’ll be doing a completely different configuration for the internet and network to ensure gamers in the LAN have a flawless experience,” he said.
