MTN Cameroon strikes SMS, gaming content deal

US headquartered media and communications group Mandalay Digital plans to supply SMS and gaming-based content via its digital turbine marketplace to MTN subscribers in Cameroon.

In a press statement released by Mandalay Digital, it says it has joined forces with mobile operator MTN Cameroon and Africa cellular value-added-supplier YellowDot to provide services and mobile content to MTN subscribers in that country.

Los Angeles based Mandalay Digital delivers a mobile services platform for operators and third-party publishers to provide portal management, user interface, content development and billing technology offerings.

Meanwhile, YellowDot supplies value added services to mobile operators in five African countries and, in particular, works with MTN subsidiaries. YellowDot also has offices in South Africa, Nigeria and Cameroon.

According to a press statement, the collaboration is expected to commence in September.

The collaboration is also set to represent Mandalay Digital's first venture into the African mobile market.

"We are excited about our expansion into the mobile market in Africa where we can continue to leverage our knowledge and technological abilities to drive higher consumption of quality content," said Peter Adderton, chief executive officer of Mandalay Digital, in a statement.

Noy Hazan, CEO of YellowDot, Africa, added in a statement, "The demand for data and cellphone content is growing rapidly in the region and we hope that we can do our part to help meet that growing demand. Operators have to continuously be aware of mobile trends, and what we are noticing is that while consumption of voice content and services has plateaued, VAS content, such as gaming and music content is just beginning to take hold."

Cameroon has a total of 11.0 million mobile subscribers and a penetration level of approximately 50%.

MTN is the largest mobile operator in the West African nation with more than 7.5 million subscribers with approximately 56% of the market share.
