BlackBerry's EMM strategy and security push

Serious mobility for serious business. This is how BlackBerry describes its core value proposition involving enterprise mobile security management and the strategy the mobile services provider will use – together with the availability of its BES 12 management platform - to compete going forward.

Speaking at a media briefing session at its head office in Johannesburg, Nader Henein, Regional Director, Advanced Security Solutions within BlackBerry's Advisory Division, reflected on the increased mobile security need in business. He said that one in three organisations is highly confident that their data assets are protected from unauthorised access via mobile devices.

Henein said the Company's approach to enterprise mobile management is based on secure agnostic endpoint management.

"We also support the major operating systems including BlackBerry, IoS, Android and Windows... these change from country to country."

BlackBerry says it will manage all devices from a single, unified console, and will deploy and manage devices across all user types and ownership models – including BYOD, Company Owned Personal Enabled (COPE) and Company Owned Business Only (COBO).

Objectives like seamless separate work and personal content and apps, as well as independently certified security, have been identified as priorities for the Company going forward.

Henein also emphasised the importance of independently certified security for the Company and its customers.

BES 12 in the Cloud

In 2015 BlackBerry will make BES 12 available in the Cloud. The platform is currently available on-premise, but the Company announced that private cloud and hybrid deployment will take place next year. This means users can drag and drop into the Cloud without any downtime, Henein explained.

Looking to exert its influence within the IoT space, the mobile services company also announced its Enterprise Identity Initiative which enables organisations to take control of apps in the cloud, underpinned by its QNX platform . "This is something we've had for a while now, but we are now productising it," Henein continued.

Bes12 provides the foundation to extend EMM beyond smartphones and tables to integrate new endpoints. The goal of the business is to unite people and machines across IoT, building on the M2M heritage of QNX.

From a technology and skills investment point of view, BlackBerry has made several acquisitions and partnerships including with Movirtu and Samsung.

Henein said that the financial stability of a business is what counts in the market and, to this end, BlackBerry has turned the Company around.

"In 2015 our focus will be on keeping things in the black and by the end of the fiscal year 2016 we aim to be generating profit," he said.
