Nokia yet to confirm Africa sale date for Lumia 920, 820
South Africans could have to wait a little while longer to find out when Nokia’s newly launched Lumia 920 and 820 smartphones are coming to the country.
The smartphones feature bright colour exteriors such as red and yellow, bigger screens and technology that reduces blur and shakiness in pictures and video. They also run on Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system.
Nokia has said that the new devices are planned to arrive in Australia and Europe as early as November.
However, dates for when customers in South Africa and the rest of Africa should expect the smartphones to become available are still unknown.
The struggling handset maker has described the Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820 as flagship phones, which are to be pitted against Apple’s latest iPhone 5, Samsung’s Galaxy range and Google’s Android devices.
“No announcements locally as yet,” Leo Mckay, communications manager at Nokia South Africa, told ITWeb Africa.
“We expect more operator and retailer announcements in the coming weeks,” he explained.
While those in Africa continue to wait, those in Europe and Australia have questioned the pricing of Nokia’s Lumia 920.
In Europe the Lumia 920 will set consumers back $836, while the Lumia 820 is slightly cheaper priced at $643.
According to techspot.com, Nokia has priced its Lumia 920 smartphone higher than Samsung’s Galaxy SIII, which currently retails at $693.
However, despite the pricings local officials at Nokia remain optimistic.
“We’re pleased by the support we’re seeing for our Windows Phone 8 flagship devices,” said Mckay.
“Operators and retailers around the world have started to announce plans to sell the Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820,” he concluded.
