Multichoice Africa Holdings has not committed to resume its services in Malawi for now.

The squabbles between pay-TV MultiChoice and Malawi's regulator continued this week, with the two unable to reach an agreement.

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) and MultiChoice are at odds over price increases.

MultiChoice Africa Holdings discontinued DStv services in Malawi last month due to a pricing dispute with MACRA.

The disagreement began in July of this year, when MultiChoice upped DStv prices and the regulator responded by stating that MultiChoice is not entitled to hike DStv tariffs without first consulting MACRA, prompting the pay-TV provider to stop services.

However, MACRA finally authorised MultiChoice's application to raise subscription costs for their DSTV services yesterday, but the pay-TV  provider insists on waiting for the court decision first.

According to MACRA's director general, Daud Suleman, the regulator allowed tariff adjustments after considering and reviewing MultiChoice proposal.

“The Authority wishes to remind you to notify all customers of the subscription fee changes before implementation. Now that the said tariffs have been submitted to and considered by the Authority, the Authority expects DSTV service in Malawi to resume,” said Suleman.

He went on to say that the decision was made notwithstanding their legal fight with MultiChoice.

In response, MultiChoice Malawi marketing and communications manager Zena Makunje told ITWeb Africa in an interview that the reintroduction of DStv services in Malawi will be dependent on the conclusion of the ongoing legal proceedings.
