South Africa’s MTN has confirmed to ITWeb Africa that its uncapped BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) is planned to be restored for all its customers.

Earlier this year, MTN announced that its BIS offering would be capped at 200 MB and re-branded as the “BlackBerry Absolute” service from 1 March 2013.

However, some MTN customers have taken to social media saying that they have received text messages from MTN informing them that the uncapped service is ‘back’.

The text message reportedly read, “Yello! MTN has brought back your unlimited service on BlackBerry Absolute. Your service will not be capped to 200 MB.”

MTN SA general manager for brand and communications, Ryan Gould, told ITWeb Africa: “MTN has listened to its customers and have brought back what customers were asking for.”

“With MTN’s BlackBerry Absolute service, customers will receive free uncapped data access until their next top-up anniversary date,” he said.

Gould further explained, “It is important to note that after they have used 200 MB, customers checking their data availability will see that it reflects zero megabytes remaining even though the service will continue to function.”
