Equitel, Finserve's mobile virtual network operator, has announced the debut of its Kenya's fifth generation (5G) network.

Finserve, a completely owned subsidiary of Equity Group Holdings, has launched the service in collaboration with their host mobile network operator, Airtel.

According to a company statement, the launch would provide quicker and more dependable connectivity, allowing businesses, communities, and individuals to fully participate in the digital economy.

Equitel has launched the 5G service in over 370 places nationally, including Mombasa, Nakuru, Nairobi, Athi River, Kisumu, Kakamega, Siaya, Eldoret, and Bungoma, among others.

In partnership with the partner network, the 5G service will soon be expanded to densely populated regions such as residential neighbourhoods, shopping malls, and core business districts.

According to recent Communication Authority statistics, the number of 5G network users in Kenya climbed to 509,737 in the last three months, ending in September 2023. This represents a 13.3% increase, or 59,943 users, over the 449,794 recorded by the authority in June.

The statistics show a growth in demand for high internet speeds, driven by the country's technical developments.

As of November 2023, Safaricom had expanded its 5G coverage to select municipalities in 35 counties. Airtel Kenya, on the other hand, announced plans to deploy an additional 100 5G stations around the country by the end of 2023.

The operator announced in November that the number of additional 5G sites would expand from 180 to 221 wards and from 15 to 32 counties.

Equitel plans to entice users by offering a 100% bonus on 5G data bundles every Wednesday and Friday.

To use Equitel 5G services, clients must have a 5G-capable device and a 4G-LTE SIM card.
