MTN maintains voice, data dominance in Ghana
Mobile network MTN has a 45% market share of Ghana’s voice market, according to the country’s subscriber statistics for February 2014.
Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA) has released the numbers, which point to MTN’s number of voice subscribers being 12,986,832.
This means MTN is twice as big as its nearest competitor Vodafone Ghana, which had 6,413,376 voice subscribers for February 2014.
The rest of the country’s voice market share is divided as follows: Tigo with a 14.28% market share and 4,086,615 subscribers, Airtel with a 12.36% market share and 3,537,316 subscribers, Glo Mobile with a 5.02% market share and 1,437,580 subscribers, and Expresso with a 0.54% market share and 153,727 subscribers.
Ghana’s total mobile market voice size then stands at 28,615,446, while the country’s population is 26,249,665, according to the NCA.
Meanwhile, the country’s mobile data market is proving to be a lot more competitive, at least among the smaller telecom players.
According to the NCA, MTN’s data user numbers for February 2014 stand at 6,776,644, Vodafone at 2,033,867, Airtel at 1,978,240, Millicom at 1,675,915, Glo Mobile at 305,117 and Expresso at 50,551.
This means that Ghana’s total mobile data market size is 12,820,334, representing a penetration rate of 48.84%.
Ghana’s number of fixed lines shrank from 268,952 in January to 267,914 in February 2014.
