Xoom money transfer links up with Ghana

Digital money transfer provider and PayPal service Xoom has announced the expansion of its service to facilitate money transfer between Ghanaians residing in the United States and their families, friends in Ghana.

Money can be transferred via any mobile device and, according to the service, will include instant bank deposit service to major banks in Ghana, including EcoBank Ghana, Barclays Bank Ghana, Fidelity Bank.

"At Xoom, our goal is to make sending money around the world easier, more convenient and faster. That's why we're excited to extend Xoom's services into Ghana," said Julian King, Chief Marketing Officer and Vice President of Business Development, Xoom.

Customers must provide their recipient's bank account number and the money is instantly transferred to banks in Ghana and accessible, according to the company.

"Customers can send up to $2,999 for just $4.99 when paying with their bank account," says Xoom in a statement, however, this is in addition to the transaction fee. The company secures revenue from converting US Dollars into other currencies.

"Xoom provides locked-in exchange rates on Cedi (GHS) deposits to Ghana and a secure and convenient way for immigrants to send money from their computer, tablet, or mobile phone," the statement continues.

In March this year Xoom announced the launch of its service in Nigeria, and quoted World Bank as saying US$5.7-billion is sent to the West African country annually from the US.
