Mobile telecoms firm Huawei Technologies has shipped more than 3 million smartphones in Eastern and Southern Africa, an official said on Tuesday.

Larking Huang, general manager at Huawei Consumer South Africa said that 2014 has been a good for the company's consumer device business.

He added that in South Africa alone the company has shipped more than a million units, making Huawei the number 2 smartphone provider in the Middle East and Africa region.

Huang made the comments at the launch of the Chinese technology company's latest flagship smartphone devices.

Huawei unveiled two new devices - a phablet device, the Ascend Mate 7, and a smartphone, the Ascend G7.

The two new devices join Huawei's 7 series smartphone line and are set to hit the African market early in 2015.

Huawei's Mate 7 is a six-inch phablet and boasts features such as a slim 7.9mm curved design, 2GB RAM and 16GB of on-board memory.

The phone also has single-touch fingerprint technology. It is expected to retail for between R7000-R9000.

Meanwhile, the Ascend G7 is a single SIM handset and expected to retail at a price of between R4000 and R5000.

"These devices symbolise our continuous commitment to provide customers with access to premium quality products which won't break the bank," said Yudi Rambaran director of product marketing Huawei Consumer Business Unit, South Africa.

"The Ascend Mate7 is the latest big-screen smartphone from Huawei that showcases our ambitions as the number three smartphone vendor in the world," said Rambaran.
