Telcos in Cameroon have two months to adjust tariffs

Cameroon Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Minette Libom Li Likeng.

Mobile operators have been instructed to modify off-net and on-net prices within two months as a result of protests earlier this year about the quality of telecom services in Cameroon.

Yesterday, the minister of posts and telecommunications Minette Libom ordered price adjustments for postpaid, prepaid, and promotional offer subscriptions.

Following complaints from customers about the poor quality of service, the Cameroonian government ordered Camtel, MTN, and Orange to immediately improve mobile services in April.

All three operators attended a crisis meeting with minister Libom at the time, where all operators promised to enhance their services and laid out plans to do so.

Operators at the time had two weeks to compensate subscribers for any lost data due to network outages.

At the meeting, the Telecommunications Regulatory Board, which was also present, made a commitment to regularly examine the networks to make sure operators adhere to their commitments.

A pricing comparison tool was promised by the government and operators back in April to help users find the cheapest offers and fight exorbitant rates.

Yesterday, the minister said: "licensed operators are required to display the off-net and on-net tariffs for each service offered for reasons of transparency."

The minister cautioned that the operators would be subject to sanctions for non-compliance under the current legislation.

Additionally, the regulator has been given a year to monitor changes.
