Microsoft, Intel launch Kenyan youth device programme

Global software giant Microsoft, chipmaker Intel and the Kenya Private Schools Alliance have launched a ‘youth device programme’.

The programme is planned to provide a bundle of cheap devices, educational applications, online services, affordable data plans, and smart financing to Kenyan learning institutions as part of the Microsoft 4Afrika’s Youth Initiative.

The 4Afrika Youth Initiative was launched earlier this year to provide scholarships, fellowships, and internships to thousands of African youngsters.

And the device programme is planned to kick-start in Kenya, while it is also expected to be rolled-out to other African nations such as Egypt, South Africa, and Nigeria.

“A range of Microsoft and Intel devices and services in different form factors will be available, each one preloaded with education applications including Intel’s Explore and Learn, the full Office 365 suite, and Skype,” says a statement from Microsoft.

“The devices based on Intel architecture are purpose built for education - they are student-friendly rugged designs that are water-resistant and dust-resistant to promote anytime, anywhere learning.

“These devices are available from a number of manufacturers and will be distributed locally by Mitsumi Distribution,” say Microsoft officials.

The statement goes on to add that Microsoft and Intel plan to also offer training for teachers on ICT integration via the ‘Intel Teach curriculum’ and ‘Microsoft’s Teach with Technology course’.
