MTN targets farm workers in Zambia

Telecoms company MTN Zambia has launched a mobile money bulk payment solution that aims to help farmers pay their workers using the service.

The company said the payment solution minimises the risk of paying these employees in cash.

MTN Zambia chief sales and distribution manager, Amon Jere, said the bulk payment solution will also help reduce the use of paper and manual transmissions of payment instructions.

Jere also said in a statement that the service has been launched by a company in the Mkushi farming block in Zambia's Central Province.

Jere added that there is a need for financial literacy in Zambia, especially among the unbanked population.

"Most people with humble income feel they have no capacity to save because of the misconception that banking is expensive and a preserve of the wealthy in society.

"But now we have seen technological advancements that provides banking solutions to areas not served by banks," Jere said.
