Mobile network operator MTN has confirmed that Wim Vanhelleputte, the CEO of MTN Uganda has been deported from Uganda.

In a statement MTN said it has not been notified of the grounds for the deportation and is working hard to establish precise reasons.

"We are understandably concerned about these developments and are engaging with the authorities to seek understanding that would lead us to resolving this matter," reads an excerpt from the statement.

"To ensure business continuity, we have appointed Mr Gordian Kyomukama, currently Chief Technology Officer, as Acting Chief Executive. Our focus continues to be on delivering the best quality products and services to our customers," the company continued.

MTN Uganda added that it is fully committed to respecting and operating within the laws of the country.

In January 2019 ITWeb Africa reported that Ugandan authorities have arrested and deported MTN Uganda head of sales and distribution Annie Bilenge Tabura, and the company's chief marketing officer Olivier Prentout.

MTN Uganda issued a statement confirming the development, but offered no additional information.

The statement said Tabura was arrested by unidentified security personnel upon arrival at the company's headquarters on Saturday while returning from MTN Group meeting in Rwanda.

"Both Mr. Prentout and Ms Tabura have been deported from Uganda to their home countries, France and Rwanda respectively. MTN Uganda together with all employees, remain fully committed to operating within- and respecting the laws of the country," the statement read.
