Chinese telecoms equipment maker Huawei has launched the pink colour version what it claims to be one of the thinnest smartphones in the world, the Ascend P6, for the South African market.

The Huawei Ascend P6 ‘pink’ smartphone follows the launch of the first two black and white colour versions of the phone in August this year.

Speaking at the launch of the device, Huawei president for the eastern and southern African region Da Feng Li said his company was thrilled to launch the popular smartphone in a new and “sexy” colour.

According to Huawei officials, the thin design of the device was inspired by paper.

Liza de Wet, vice president of the eastern and southern Africa region at Huawei, said the Ascend P6 is the “world’s thinnest” smartphone at 6.18 millimetres.

She added that since the launch of the phone, the company sells more than 2,000 units per week of the black and white colours in South Africa.

The smartphone boasts features such as a 5 megapixel (MP) front-facing camera and 8MP camera with a 4cm macro view, and has a 2G RAM.

De Wet has told ITWeb Africa that the phone is planned to be available in markets such as Kenya, Congo and Angola at the beginning of the festive season.

The company also unveiled its latest 400g core router, which it describes as the fastest router in the world with the ability to accommodate large amounts of traffic.

Huawei currently operates in over 140 countries worldwide including 25 operations in the eastern and southern African region.
