Liquid Telecom begins FTTH expansion

Liquid Telecom this week announced the expansion of its fibre to the home (FTTH) project in Zimbabwe with homes and businesses in the Victoria Falls region to receive direct fibre connectivity, the company saying internet connectivity is a "basic human right".

Liquid said today that it has started laying fibre to homes and businesses in Victoria Falls - having already laid fibre rings around the area - over which ZOL Zimbabwe will provide the "Fibroniks" FTTH service, with unlimited data packages.

The offering has so far been available in Harare, but Liquid aims to enable more people to "participate in, and benefit from, the digital revolution".

"We believe that internet connectivity is a basic human right and so it is our mission to provide quality broadband to every person and business in Africa," said Tom Tudor, Chief Marketing Officer at Liquid Telecom.

The Fibroniks service offers unlimited data packages with speeds of up to 100Mbps, allowing consumers to access whatever they want, whenever they want, at a guaranteed fixed monthly price.

In particular, Liquid highlighted that the speed of connectivity not only equals, but often exceeds that of connections available in Europe and the US, marking a significant improvement in connectivity available on the African continent.

"Every day we lay new fibre which enables us to deliver what we refer to as "The Real Internet", a superfast service which transforms how people access and share information," Tudor said.

To date, broadband services in Victoria Falls - with its population in excess of 35,000, and a popular tourist destination - have mostly been via ADSL, WiMAX and cellular services such as CDMA and 3G/EDGE which offer speeds of no more than 512kbps, Liquid said.

"Fibroniks will provide the people of Victoria Falls with the fastest broadband available in Africa today," the company said.

The Fibroniks offering also comes with a voice service, which Liquid claims is the most cost-effective voice network available in Zimbabwe.

Outside Zimbabwe, Liquid Telecom has also launched a FTTH service in Zambia; while plans are in place to roll out the offering in Kenya, Rwanda, and two further countries in the coming months.
