Ghana has become home to software giant Microsoft’s first ever appointment of an African female country manager: Otema Yirenkyi.

On Monday, the company announced that Otema, a Ghanaian with over 14 years ICT experience, is taking the role as Microsoft’s Ghana country manager.

Otema has a BSc degree in Industrial and Labour Relations, as well as an MA in Development Studies.

According to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Ghana has the likes of Africa’s highest mobile broadband penetration rates of 33.3%, making it one of the continent’s most advanced ICT markets.

“We have seen tremendous growth in broadband availability and internet penetration in Ghana, as well as the introduction of newer devices such as tablets and smartphones, which have fundamentally changed how consumers experience and use technology,” says Yirenkyi in a press statement.

“This always-on, always-connected era that we find ourselves in holds new promise for what technology can bring to people’s lives and to businesses. And it gives us an opportunity to use our technology, talent, time and money to help create sustainable growth in the country and across the African continent,” adds Yirenkyi in the statement

Yirenkyi’s focus in Ghana for Microsoft is to improve access to technology, skills development opportunities and resources.
