TikTok removes over 360,000 videos in Kenya

Fortune Mgwili-Sibanda, TikTok's director of government and public policy for Sub-Saharan Africa.

TikTok, a short-form video streaming platform, has announced that it banned over 360,000 videos in Kenya because of violations of its community guidelines.

According to TikTok's Q2 2024 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report, released on Wednesday, the action is part of the company's attempts to promote a safer environment for users across the country.

The removed videos, it said, accounted for 0.3% of all videos uploaded in the country during the most current reporting period.

According to the findings, 99.1% of these videos were removed proactively before being reported by users, with 95% removed within 24 hours.

TikTok also reports that 60,465 accounts were banned for breaking its Community Guidelines, with 57,262 accounts terminated because they were thought to be under the age of 13.

The update comes after the Kenyan government accused TikTok of encouraging the spread of misinformation, allowing fraud, and disseminating graphic sexual content.

While testifying before parliament earlier this year, Fortune Mgwili-Sibanda, TikTok's director of government and public policy for Sub-Saharan Africa, stated that the platform's user regulations and features are designed to foster a positive and safe community.

Known as Community Guidelines, Mgwili-Sibanda explained that these regulations provide a set of standards and a common code of conduct for TikTok users; they provide direction on what is and is not permitted on the platform in order to make it a welcome place for all.

“TikTok is an entertaining and joyful place because of the work we put into keeping the platform safe, including investing more than $2bn in our Trust and Safety efforts this year, globally. ‘’ Mgwili-Sibanda told parliament.

To address the Kenyan government's concerns, Mgwili-Sibanda stated that the platform will continue to hold capacity-building workshops for policymakers and regulatory agencies on how TikTok operates, with a special emphasis on online safety, data privacy, and how material is moderated on the platform.

‘’We value the opportunity to contribute to keeping our Kenyan community safe on our platform and look forward to collaborating more closely with all our stakeholders in Kenya including government, the media, civil society, parents, teachers, guardians and our wider community itself,’’ he said.
