Plans to create Nigeria's 'biggest TV platform'

As Nigeria strives to meet the June deadline for migration to digital broadcast, the country's National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has unveiled plans for a national common set-top box system.

The plan was unveiled when the commission signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with United Kingdom-based tech company Inview Technologies.

The commission said Inview Technologies would work with MTS Communications Limited for the collection of annual Digital Content Access Fee (DCAF); they will provide a Conditional Access System (CAS); Electronic Programme Guide (EPG); Push Video-On-Demand on DTT; and interactive advertising.

They will also help in measuring the audience in addition to the provision of audience measurement service among others.

According to NBC, the deal would result in the creation of a national set-top-box platform that will enable communalities for all digital television services in Nigeria.

Director-General of NBC, Emeka Mba, said the commission is set to use the partnership to create Nigeria's and Africa's largest media platform.

"NBC through the agreement hopes to create the biggest TV platform in Nigeria and around the African continent. Mba further stressed that the agreement signing was paramount to moving closer towards the digital switch over (DSO) and help give birth to the national set-top box platform that would enable commonalities for all services in the country," he said.
