Orange exits Kenya

Orange has officially left the East African country after announcing that it sold its 70% stake in Telkom Kenya to Helios Investment Partners.

Little has been disclosed about the transaction or amount involved and it is subject to approval by the relevant authorities.

In a statement released to the media Orange said that, "This signature reflects Orange's constant focus on optimising its portfolio of assets. The Africa and Middle-East region is a strategic priority for the Group."

The company has struggled in the local market and has been eyeing potential partners to take over its operations in the East African country.

Vietnam's Viettel has been a contender for its sale.

According to the latest Communication Authority of Kenya quarterly reports, Orange had 11.2% market share trailing Airtel Kenya, which has also had a rough time operating in a market dominated by Safaricom.

Telkom Kenya (Orange) subscribers had hit 4 million subscribers by the end of June 2015.
