Liquid deepens Africa's connectivity with Sea Project launch
Pan African telecom group, Liquid Telecom has announced that it will soon begin building an undersea cable from South Africa to Middle East and then onwards to Europe to improve the continent's connectivity.
Under the banner Liquid Sea, the company has already issued a Request for Tenders for prospective bidders to secure the contract to build the 10,000 kilometre network in the next two years.
International transfers enable internet service providers (ISPs) to access off-continent content at a cheaper price without having to pay substantial exchange fees on different networks.
According to Liquid Telecoms the Liquid Sea project will offer speeds between 20 to 30 Tbps.
"The Liquid Sea project reaffirms our commitment to building Africa's digital future and removing any bottlenecks in providing the fastest and most reliable access to the Internet to every single African on the continent," Nic Rudnick, the CEO of Liquid Telecom said.
Rudnick added, "The impact of Liquid Sea will be a far more reliable and ultra-fast connection for governments, businesses, schools and homes in both coastal and landlocked countries across Africa."
There are other cable systems that have branched out of the continent. The West African Cable System (WACS) that connects the west side of the African continent has its final landing point in the UK, giving much needed international transfers.
Main One also connects the West African nations to Europe with a landing site in Portugal.
The Liquid Sea project will follow SEACOM's footsteps on offering offshore connection for the East side of the continent to the Middle East.
Coastal and landlocked countries in the continent will benefit the most from the project.
"It is of utmost importance to us to create equal opportunities to people living both in coastal and landlocked countries, the latter being too often forgotten in large international projects of this kind," David Eurin, Liquid Telecom's Group Chief Strategy Officer said.
