Mobile operator Tigo Tanzania is looking to invest over $100 million in infrastructure to expand its network coverage and capacity in the country, according to reports.

Tigo hopes the expansion program could ease connectivity issues being experienced by a number of its subscribers in the country, the telco’s country manager, Diego Gutierrez, told the East African Business Week .

Gutierrez said that the planned investment could be used for capacity upgrades and to install new base stations countrywide.

He further added that the project, which is expected to be completed by end of 2012, is aimed at reaching 26 regions: a move that could give Tigo the largest operational footprint coverage in the country.

According to statistics released this year by the Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority, Vodacom Tanzania has a 47% share of the country’s mobile market with 12,633,507 subscribers.

Airtel has a 26% market share with 7,105,650 subscribers, while Tigo has a 20% market share with 5,497,833 subscribers. Zantel lags behind the other operators as it has 6% share of the market with 1,496,102 subscribers.
