Legal debate erupts over Ghana’s Expresso ownership
Computers and peripheral equipment manufacturer, Kludjeson International, is embroiled in a legal battle with Sudanese telecom group Sudatel over the ownership of Expresso Telecom in Ghana.
Expresso Telecom is a Ghanaian CDMA operator that has been operating in the country since 1995.
The mobile services provider is the smallest mobile operator with just 153,782 subscribers at the end of September 2013, according to Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA).
In January 2003 Expresso Telecom was re-branded to Kasapa Telecom.
According to Ghana-based electronics distributor Kludjeson International, they are the sole shareholders of Expresso.
However, Sudanese telecoms firm Sudatel claims to own 75% of the Ghanaian telco and Sudatel have claimed that they are looking to sell their stake in Expresso.
However, Kludjeson denies that Sudatel even has any shares in Expresso Ghana.
A statement signed by lawyers for Kludjeson International and Kasapa Telecom (Expresso) says it is false that Sudatel is in the process of selling its stake as it has stake.
The statement also highlights that it was false that a company known as Expresso Telecom owns 100% shares in Kasapa Telecom and that the issue surrounding shareholding was the subject matter of court action.
The statement added that Sudatel has since 2008 embarked on a ‘fraudulent scheme’ of 'purported shareholding’ in Kasapa Telecom.
“All persons interested in acquiring shares in Kasapa Telecom should be wary of this so-called Sudan Telecom since it has no share in Kasapa Telecom,” read the statement.
