Nigeria warns of new LinkedIn cyber threat—CovertCatch

cyber-criminals are propagating via LinkedIn.

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has cautioned Nigerians about a new malware version named "CovertCatch," which cyber-criminals are spreading via LinkedIn.

This was announced via an X post on NITDA's page.

NITDA stated: "This alarming trend targets individuals in critical sectors such as defense, media, technology, and academia by masquerading as recruiters or job opportunity providers."

According to the agency, CovertCatch is designed to stealthily infiltrate devices and networks, allowing thieves to steal data, record keystrokes, and capture screen actions without being detected.

“Once installed, this malware poses severe risks, potentially leading to financial losses, reputational damage, and significant data breaches,” the agency noted.

The agency highlighted that the expansion of CovertCatch endangers both individual users and companies, increasing the probability of future assaults such as ransomware and systemic hacks.

To prevent criminal activity, the agency advises individuals and firms to avoid unsolicited job offers or recruitment communications on LinkedIn, particularly those requesting file downloads or external links.

NITDA urged Nigerians to be attentive and proactive in their online activity to protect themselves from potential risks such as CovertCatch and related viruses, as cyber threats grow.
