Popular social network Facebook has launched its Internet.org mobile application in Ghana.

Facebook has embarked on its 'Internet.org' to connect the two-thirds of the globe that does not have internet access.

And the app allows its users access to health, employment and local information services without data charges.

According to a statement Facebook partnered with African mobile operator, Airtel, to bring the app to Ghana.

Airtel customers in Ghana will now have access to a set of websites and services for free, including maternal health, education, news and sports updates, and local information, it reads.

Some of the sites that users can access are AccuWeather, BBC News, Ebola Information, Jobberman, and Wikipedia.

"Ghana is the fifth country we've connected with Internet.org, after Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya and Colombia," says the statement on the Facebook website.

"More people can now use the internet for free to find jobs, read books, and stay connected and we hope to bring the Internet.org app to more countries soon."

Ghana joins other African countries namely Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia in being among the world's first countries to have access to Facebook's Internet.org app.

Last year Facebook said it had notched up 100 million monthly users in Africa.
