Multinational hardware and software company, Hewlett-Packard, plans to roll-out a verification code-technology that could help some African consumers detect fake ink, cartridges or toners.
The verification mechanism takes the form of a Quick Response (QR) code that consumers can use to verify if the equipment is genuine.
"After checking for the label's holographic properties to verify authenticity, customers can capture the QR label with a smartphone to access HP Mobile Authentication and validate the label. Valid labels generate a confirmation message, which indicates that the cartridge has a valid code," says HP’s Ink and Web Solutions category manager, West, East and Southern Africa Janet Thiong'o
She further added that the verification code is planned to come preloaded on all new-generation machine printers and can be installed on old printers as well.
“This will make it possible for users to tell if ink, cartridge or toner is genuine,” she said.
"A notification will be sent before they start using, and it will be particularly useful for users who order in bulk from third parties and are not able to verify the supplier,” said Thiong'o.
Alternatively, customers are also able to enter the alphanumeric code printed next to the QR Code into the HP Mobile Authentication website to verify the authenticity of equipment.
"Counterfeits are an industry problem and it is up to every player in the industry to play their part," said Thiong'o.
