‘Cape Town edges Johannesburg to be SA’s top startup job spot’
Cape Town is the place to be for those looking to get hired by a technology startup in South Africa, according to research from job search engine Adzuna.co.za.
Adzuna -- which has operations in the likes of South Africa, Brazil, Germany, Australia and the UK -- stems its name from ‘Zuna’, which means ‘abundance’ in a number of African languages.
And research from the website says that startups across South Africa are recruiting for over 451 open positions, according to data analysed on its website for 65,000 job positions in November 2013.
Adzuna adds in a statement that this represents an increase of 28% in the last six months.
And popular tourist city Cape Town has edged Africa’s economic powerhouse Johannesburg to be named the top startup hiring city in South Africa with over “50% of the nation’s startup jobs”, according to Adzuna.
The jobs website goes on to say that online fashion retailer Zando, price comparison website PriceCheck and communications firm Cerebra are “leading the recruitment charge” on its website.
“Cape Town, helped by the Silicon Cape initiative and and an entrepreneurial reputation, led the country in startup recruitment, hosting over 50% of all advertised roles,” says Adzuna in a press statement.
“Johannesburg came a close second with 34%, with Pretoria coming a distant third with just over 5% of all startup roles,” Adzuna adds.
Other key findings of the Adzuna study include that developers are the most in-demand among South African startups as “40% of vacancies” are looking for web developers and software engineers.
Meanwhile, operational roles -- such as account management and customer support -- make up for 23% of jobs, while designers constitue 14%, marketing 13% and sales 10%.
Adzuna further says that startups “often pay a little less than more established corporations” in South Africa but that some do “offer stock options”.
Also, the “hottest product category” for those hiring startups are e-Commerce related with 23% of the jobs, followed by marketing at 20% and financial technology at 17%.
“These new figures clearly show that, while still in its infancy, the South African tech startup ecosystem is maturing and creating more jobs, with well-funded and profitable companies emerging, with a need for top talent and the financial clout to take on big tech companies. It willl be great to see the improvement and surge in vitality in the job market as grassroot startup businesses keep growing and hiring more South Africans,” says Gabriel Puliatti, country manager South Africa at Adzuna, in a press statement.
