ST Digital takes on Cameroon’s telcos for share of datacentre market

Pan-African technology firm ST Digital has established a Tier III datacentre in Douala, Cameroon, operational since end January 2021.

The company, a Microsoft Cloud Solution provider with operations in Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon and Togo, says the new datacentre is the first Tier III resource in Central Africa to be owned by an independent player that meets global standards.

The new datacentre’s electrical network is built with high redundancy and features a 10GB network core with fibre optic network lines to provide users with access to stored applications and data.

ST Digital officials add that the datacentre is designed with several security features to guarantee the safety of data including video surveillance and alarm system, double control access system with biometric and badge authentication, secured bays, as well as an uninterrupted upgrade system to manage bandwidth use and higher electricity consumption.

The datacentre has varied (600mA to 32A) electrical power density, a 4,000KVA diesel-powered standby generator with a 10,000-litre fuel tank, as well as inverters and precision air-conditioning in N+N redundancy.

The resource is designed to maintain 99.982% uptime, and can only be down for a maximum of 96 minutes a year.

Anthony Same, Director General of ST Digital, said enterprises can now host their data and applications with a local, neutral, flexible and professional provider.

Same said that ST Digital is keen help enterprises better control their IT systems and reduce associated costs.

ST Digital will provide services including collocation and data storage and recovery, hosting of servers, as well as software services, ranging from virtual servers to security. Additional services include VSAT liaison, radio liaison, and internet connection.

ST Digital will compete with Cameroon Postal Services (Campost), which hosts the country’s National Payment Switch, Cameroon Telecommunications (Camtel), Orange Cameroun and MTN Cameroon for market share.
