Outrage online over Kenyan mini-skirt debacle

Kenya's Education minister Mutula Kilonzo has reportedly been forced to retract his statement that school girls should be allowed to wear mini-skirts, after social media users demanded his resignation.

The minister has for several days been the subject of public debate on social media after making remarks that seemed to defend demands by schoolgirls that they be allowed to wear short skirts.

This is despite his assertion that he never made the call.

Nevertheless, citizens lashing out at Kilonzo have gone as far as to post edited pictures of the minister dressed in a mini-skirt on social media websites such as Twitter and Facebook.

Billionaire entrepreneur, Chris Kirubi used his Twitter handle @CKirubi to correct the minister:
“Mutula is the Minister for Education in charge of policies, not a headmistress to micro manage petty school rules.”

Responding to a story published online, an anonymous reader in support of the minister's statement wrote, “Kenya's Chief Justice wears earrings. What is wrong with school girls wearing mini-skirts?”

A post on the Facebook account of Mutula Kilonzo read, “I actually admire the viguor, humour and backlash of Kenyans especially on social media concerning my statement on .. Mini-skirts in schools issue. Thank you Kenyans for the online back lash :-)”
