Zimbabwe looks to connect to WACS

Zimbabwean officials say the country plans to connect to the West Africa Cable System (WACS), in a bid to bring down data costs.

Talk of Zimbabwe's link WACS is driven by the country’s state owned TelOne and its Namibian counterpart Telecom Namibia.

And both Zimbabwe and Namibia technical experts have met in Namibia’s capital Windhoek to discuss the connection to WACS, with the completion date mooted to be June 2013.

"The link with WACS in Namibia and another connection with Eassy through South Africa or Mozambique will be definitely bring down both data and voice costs,” a senior Zimbabwean government official, who chose to remain anonymous, told ITWeb Africa.

"This initiative is good news for Zimbabwe's economic transformation as the country seeks to unlock investment opportunities that are readily available for utilisation," the official added.
