Kenyan startup helps people pay for meals with MPesa

Kopo-Kopo, a Kenyan mobile money integrator startup, has partnered with one of the largest online food catalogues, Eat Out Kenya, to enable customers to pay for meals using MPesa.

Eat Out Kenya has the broadest catalogue of restaurants in Kenya and plans to facilitate the partnership of Kopo-Kopo and participating food places.

Eat Out says its booking engine has seen over 100,000 diners at hundreds of restaurants, generating over Kshs 200 million in revenue for its restaurant clients since 2010.

“We are very excited about the partnership with Safaricom and Eat Out as it gives Kenya’s leading restaurants a chance to accept electronic payments at the best rate in Kenya,” Dylan Higgins, chief executive Kopo Kopo said.

Safaricom chief executive, Bob Collymore said, “This partnership will afford restaurant owners the opportunity to attract a vast number of clientele as well as process their payment by the seconds.”

According to the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK), the MPesa system boasts nearly 15 million customers in Kenya as of last year and has been integrated in many services.

“We are looking forward to bringing new easily accessible technologies to restaurants for the convenience of both patrons and restaurateurs,” Mikul Shah, managing director, Eat Out Kenya commented.
