Africa-focused B2B e-commerce network Wasoko has responded to what it describes as false and misleading media reports that claim the company has relocated to Zanzibar and failed in Kenya.

Daniel Yu, CEO of the company, issued a statement in which he said the company was aware of these reports and said that Wasoko continues to be headquartered in Kenya, and recently launched new HQ offices at Senteu Plaza, Kilimani.

Some media have reported that while Yu, along with most of the company’s technical team was relocating to Zanzibar, the company’s operations in Kenya were not affected and it remains headquartered in the East African country.

In August this year Wasoko partnered with the government of Zanzibar to establish an innovation hub to manufacture tech solutions.

As Business Insider Africa reported, this is touted as the first private-public partnership between an African tech start-up and the Zanzibar government for ‘Silicon Zanzibar’, an official initiative established to attract and relocate tech companies from Africa.

Yu said the Innovation Hub in Zanzibar launched in August is focused on building world-class solutions to support the company’s operations across Africa.

The team at the Hub comprises engineers, product managers, UX designers and researchers whilst Kenya remains very much about local and companywide operations, he added.

“Our operations in Kenya continue to be the largest with 936 employees across 12 branches, supporting a local customer base of over 48,000. Wasoko launched in Kenya in 2016 and our position here has been instrumental to the company’s success, evolution and ability to scale operations across Africa, with operations in Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal,” said Yu.
