Cameroon gets its first healthcare hotline

French telecoms firm Orange plans to launch a healthcare hotline My Healthline in West African nation, Cameroon, in collaboration with the country's ministry of health.

An Orange initiative 'My Healthline' provides quick, easy access by text, which allows anonymity and confidentiality. The service is to be provided in French, English and Pidgin (the main local dialect in Cameroon).

Orange Cameroon customers will be able to access personalised advice on contraception, HIV and AIDS, sexuality and STDs from specialists by texting a special code any day of the week between 08:00 am and 10:00 pm, according to a statement.

The text message service provides customers with reliable medical information at a minimal cost EUR 0.25 per message.

The statement further notes that Orange will anonymise all questions, then transmit them to a medical service consisting of Cameroonian nurses and doctors. After analysis, the answer produced by the healthcare professionals will be sent back to the customer in less than an hour.

Orange Cameroon has 6.5 million customers, and My Healthline would be able to reach a large proportion of the population.
