MTN focuses on data services to maintain dominance in Ghana

MTN is accessible in 83% of Ghana, offering 3G services 54% of the regions covered and 4G in 24%, according to the company's Corporate Services Executive, Cynthia Lumor.

According to the latest official figures released by the National Communications Authority (NCA), as at February 2017, MTN is the largest operator in Ghana with a voice subscription market share of 51.65% and a data market share of 57.26%.

At a recent MTN Group board meeting in Ghana, CEO Ebenezer Twum Asante revealed that the company is playing a key role in Ghana's technological and economic development.

"Over the past decade, MTN Ghana has invested over US$2.5 billion in network and information technology infrastructure," he said.

Lumor revealed that the network's focus on improving its data service speaks to an increase in subscriber demand. "More people are shifting to the use of data than expected, compelling us to work hard to satisfy the increasing demand."

The NCA's data showed that MTN is dominating the 4G wireless access landscape with about 60% share of the market, while the second-placed operator in the space Surfline has 30% market share.

Lumor added that MTN is taking strategic actions to improve on service provision, particularly with regards to data services to meet an increasing demand.

"The 4G data provision services started recently and management will continue to expand its services to cover the entire country."

The company's total investment in Ghana pegs at approximately US$3.4 billion, which includes 4G LTE services as well as three switch and data centres.
