Website helps put Kenyan actors on the map

When Gerald Langiri launched a website that helps profile actors in Kenya, he did not anticipate the kind of response that he would get for the tool in the country.

Actors.co.ke enables budding actors to upload their information, video and pictures to help market themselves online.

Thanks to the tool, actors’ profile can pop up in a Google searches and it has even helped casting directors to choose talent from the website

“It has blown up,” Langiri, the founder of Actors.co.ke told ITWeb Africa.

“Many actors have gotten jobs off the website,” he said.

Langiri had ambitions to make it into the acting scene in Kenya, right after his completed his college IT degree.

He did have it rough, though, trying to break into the acting industry. But his difficulty as a budding actor soon prompted him to use his IT skills to launch the Actors.co,ke

“Most people trying to break into the industry don’t know where to start,” he said.

“Our Kenyan actors are also not known well.”

“With auditions, you had to know someone in the industry, because it is more of a cartel,” Langiri said.

Now, his website boasts of over 400 profiles of actors in Kenya and he is already getting calls from actors from Tanzania and Nigeria to have their profiles hosted on the site.

Initially, he was faced with the challenge of trying to convince professionals to put up their profiles on Actors.co.ke. But he has overcome this challenge.

“It is been two years now and the website has changed the industry,” Langiri said.

“There is now more information on the Kenyan film industry out there. It is like an IMDB (internet movie database) of Kenya.”

Although the website has been recognised by industry players including theKenya Film Commission, Langiri has no immediate plans to tap into other vibrant markets such as Tanzania and Nigeria.

The website is also currently free to use for budding actors but Langiri says he might introduce a fee to keep the platform running. His vision is to have actors launch their careers in an efficient and cheap manner.
