MTN initiates management shake-up in bid to grab more of Africa

As part of its Ambition 2025 strategy, MTN Group has announced the appointment of new CEOs for its operations in Cameroon, Rwanda and Uganda.

As outlined in a statement released by the operator, MTN Rwanda CEO Mitwa Ng’ambi becomes CEO of MTN Cameroon, replacing Stephen Blewett, who is leaving the Group.

According to MTN, Ng’ambi oversaw the listing of MTN Rwanda as well as the establishment of its Fintech subsidiary.

“She was instrumental in strengthening the business’s stakeholder engagement and has also worked in MTN’s Benin and Zambian operations,” the company added.

MTN South Africa Chief Consumer Officer Mapula Bodibe takes the helm at MTN Rwanda, bringing with her more than 15 years’ experience with MTN, including in Uganda.

“She has a strong background in commercial strategy, consumer marketing, customer strategy, brand management and communications, product management and customer analytics,” MTN stated.

Sylvia Mulinge becomes MTN Uganda CEO, joining from Safaricom, where she served as Chief Consumer Business Officer for the Group.

Mulinge replaces Wim Vanhelleputte, who will take on the new MTN Group role of Operations Executive: Markets.

MTN also announced the creation of a new senior MTN Group post - that of Operations Executive for Liberia, Guinea-Conakry, Guinea-Bissau, and Congo-Brazzaville effective 1 August 2022, reporting to the Senior Vice President: Markets, Ebenezer Asante -Twum.

MTN Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita, said, “The appointment of these executives, all with strong track records of execution and results, adds to our confidence on delivery of our Ambition 2025 strategy.”

Aggressive rebrand

In February this year, MTN announced that its brand would be overhauled as part of its Ambition 2025 strategy.

In line with its aggressive execution of this strategy, which prioritises Fintech service in Africa, the company appointed Andrew Goodrich as Executive for Banktech, part of the Group’s Fintech team, effective 1 June 2022.

Goodrich joined MTN in 2019 as a General Manager for Banktech & Beyond Payments division, and, according to MTN, has added value to its digital banking strategy.

The company also appointed Tumi Chamayou as Group Executive: Enterprise Business Unit (GEBU), effective 1 June 2022.

According to the operator, Chamayou joined the GEBU team in 2018, as General Manager for Large Enterprise Sales, and has been Acting Executive for the function since July 2020, until now.
