Wananchi Group readies for expansion in East Africa

Internet service provider, Wananchi Group is readying to deploy its services across major towns in Kenya and throughout East Africa.

According to the group CEO Richard Alden, the US$130 million capital injection received last year will enable the company to extend its services in regional cities.

"We are currently undertaking fiber extension plans in the region. We are extending our fiber to Dar-es –salaam by 2015 and other towns beyond Nairobi and Mombasa. We are now building our network in Thika," Alden told ITWeb Africa.

Wananchi also aims to crack the Ethiopian market in the course of this year.

The company's internet and digital television offering, Zuku has been a major player in the market giving customers three services, television, phone service and internet connectivity.

"This is in a bid to provide more consumers across East Africa with convenient and affordable solutions through our Triple Play platform comprising internet, phone and television in the retail and corporate market segments."

The company says that it commands 44.7 percent of the market share in internet provision in the country.
