The Raxio Group, backed by US funder Roha, has announced its intention to establish a Tier III datacentre in Maputo.

The company already has datacentre operations in the DRC, Ethiopia and Uganda, and plans to invest in infrastructure in the Ivory Coast and Tanzania later this year.

The 1.5 MW datacentre is being constructed at the Beluluane Industrial Park in Maputo.

In a statement released by Raxio, the company said the datacentre will be commissioned next year and it was capacitating the facility to run on renewable energy pivoted on a hybrid supply of hydro-generated grid and solar power.

It added that the datacentre will be custom built to be AC/DC power compatible aimed at reducing redundancy to ensure a 99.982% “uptime” capability. “Raxio Mozambique will be a critical feature to the country’s digital backbone (as through its) cross connect service, mobile network operators, ISPs and carriers will be able to interconnect to each other and their customers, reducing the cost of access across the country while stabilising connectivity at improved speeds,” the company stated.

Robert Mullins, CEO of Raxio Group said the company was seeking to capitalise on the growth of internet users in the past year amid high expectations that this trend will continue “over the coming years”.

The company did not disclose how much it was investing into the Maputo facility.

“To support this growth, we are seeing new investment from carriers and subsea cables. We are excited to be able to support the country’s digital growth with affordable, high quality, co-location environments,” he explained.
