Nine firms want Cameroon's third mobile licence

Nine unamed potential bidders have shown interest in an upcoming tender for Cameroon’s third mobile network operator licence, according to the Tribune newspaper.

The paper says that a government committee plans to draw up a shortlist of the pre-qualified applicants within two weeks, after which bidding for the new licence will be opened.

Applicants must not already be active in Cameroon and are required to have equity of at least $200 million as of 31 December 2011.

MTN Cameroon and France Telecom’s local unit, Orange Cameroon, are the two current telcos operating in that country.

Both companies said they had 11.37 million subscribers at the end of March 2012, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database.

Meanwhile, the country's mobile penetration rate stands at 50% of the population.
