dotAfrica completes promotional expedition

The dotAfrica flag has returned to its home at the African Union (AU) headquarters in Addis Ababa after its epic roadshow to encourage the adoption of the .africa geographic Top Level Domain (gTLD)..

The dotAfrica Roadshow was launched at the 29th African Union (AU) Summit held at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 3 July 2017 during the Assembly of the Heads of State and Governments of the AU.

The flag was taken on an epic journey across a number of African countries by an expedition team comprising a cross-section of nationalities from AU member states. The flag's return follows the dotAfrica expedition team's successful summit of Mount Kilimanjaro on 22 January 2018.

Lucky Masilela, CEO of Registry Africa says, "Communicating dotAfrica's potential to uplift Africa economically has been a major objective of our pan-African journey and I believe we achieved this goal."

Masilela highlighted the fact that there's a fourth industrial revolution on the horizon and initiatives like the dotAfrica gTLD can help Africa leapfrog its way to the very pinnacle of ICT achievement.

"Both the World Economic Forum and the African Development Bank speak of Africa making a concerted effort to invest in ICT-related infrastructure and trends like the Internet of Things - the recent launch of the .africa gTLD is clearly spot-on in this regard," Masilela added.

In September, the domain name was reported to have attracted over 8000 registrations, according to the ZA Central Registry (ZACR).

In early July ZACR, tasked with administering the new .africa domain, announced that dotAfrica was officially open to the general public for registration, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Uniting Africa

According to the organisation, .africa gLTD is good for African businesses, "The ability to register new Internet domains ending in .africa through Registry Africa and its Registrar and Reseller (RaR) partners holds huge potential across a myriad of sectors."

"The .africa gTLD is not just a domain, but a rallying point around which a much greater, united, African economy can be built. It is fitting and proper that Dotafrica is so enthusiastically supported by the African Union and its member states."

"The availability of a new space within which to register creative combinations of brand names, payoff lines and more is the spark that will ignite new online and offline business opportunities."
